Let’s make bird cake!

Listen up animal heroes! It’s getting to the time of year when we birds struggle to find food. Snails and slugs are thinking about hibernating, worms rarely venture above ground when it’s cold and caterpillars haven’t been seen for weeks.

So here’s what we’re going to do…we’re going to make a bird cake!

All you need is lard, bird seed, a yoghurt pot and string.

Now take one adult human and ask them to melt half a pack of lard in a saucepan. When the lard has melted, add a cup of bird seed, stir well and remove from the heat.

When the mixture is cool, spoon it into empty yoghurt pots and poke a bit of string into the mixture. When set, carefully ease the bird cake from the yoghurt pot and hang on a tree – easy.

It sounds so good that I might even have a nibble myself.

Bryn

Chirp. Chirp. Bryn's the name. I just flew in one day and decided to stay. I haven't got time to sit around chatting - things to do you know. What I will say though is that I just love food so please drop some by. Oh and lists. I love a good list.

Great idea! I find it very sad when birds can’t find food. I will try it.
Hopefully you will find enough food this winter, Bryn!

Thanks Daisy, I hope I will too. As long as humans like you help me by leaving out scraps and making bird cakes, I will be fine. 🙂

Sounds cool! I might make it because I get loads of sparrows in my garden and I think they’ll like it!

I think they will to. If they eat my bread crust and love them then they’ll defentely like seeds.

i would love to do it, but i would rather not attract birds to my garden as my cats constantly are catching birds, and they would probably get the birds that would eat my cake.

If you had a dog then your cat might stay in the garage (if its an outside cat) if its and inside cat then the best thing to do is when a bird comes then put the cat inside and when the bird(s) fly(s) away then you are okay to take your cat out again. P.s. remember to lock the cat flap, windows and doors so theres no way of your cat escaping.

even the upstairs windows, after all cats have nine lives.

Thank you Daisy, Holly, Olivia and Catz-rock! You will make a real difference to my feathered friends this winter. Amelie, I don’t blame you not wanting to encourage birds into your garden if you have cats. That’s no problem. Unless you make one and give it to someone else to hang in their garden? (someone who hasn’t got cats). Just a thought 🙂

Fantastic, well done! I think the birds will absolutely LOVE it 🙂

Its ready now, but when we hung it on table the birds couldn’t land on it so we had to put it lying on the table I also saw tiny pecks out of it, so the birds are eatin it surly.

I’ve done it before, strangely enough NO BIRDS came to it! And right now we have a bird feeder that HASN’T BEEN TOUCHED FOR MONTHS! Maybe the birds arn’t hungry where I live 🙁

Hi Sharna! That’s so strange that no birds come to your bird feeders. Perhaps the position is wrong? Remember to place bird feeders away from bushes where cats can hide and pounce on the birds. Where is your feeder Sharna? And what bird food is in it?
