The sun is shining and it’s nearly the summer holidays – yay!
So, when the weather’s nice, why not take some time out to look at the types of wildlife around you – this might be in your garden, when you’re out for a walk or even when you’re on holiday.
Why not design a little chart of all the British wild animals and insects you can think of and then tick them off, once you’ve spotted them. You could include foxes, squirrels, hedgehogs, badgers, deer, bees and butterflies. Can you think of any others? Maybe take a photo and draw any footprints that you see too.
Down at the beach
If you’re off to the beach, check out the rockpools to see what you can find. Remember though, don’t touch any of the animals or fish living there, but maybe take a photograph and then draw them when you get home. Why not check out the birds you see – I bet you lose count.
Ah, a picnic is a great way to get friends and family together and maybe even play games in the park. Eating yummy food is great too, but just a little reminder from all my friends – please don’t drop litter as it can be dangerous for wildlife like us. So, if there isn’t a bin nearby, please take your rubbish home.
Yes our slithery friends love the summer. The most common are grass snakes, which are usually olive-green, with a distinctive yellow/black collar behind the head. They’re great swimmers and are usually found near water (like garden ponds). Don’t worry – they’ll do you no harm and will probably slither away quickly if you’re nearby. In fact, you would be very, very lucky to even see a snake!
So, enjoy the summer and let us know what you’ll be getting up to…
