Summer can be so much fun

But there are things to bear in mind if you’re a pet owner. Read on for some great tips on keeping your furry friends safe when the heat turns up!

Steer clear of hot cars!

Have you ever got in a car when it’s been sitting out in the sun for ages? SO HOT! Which is why it’s incredibly dangerous to leave a pet (or anyone for that matter) in a car on a warm day. It doesn’t even need to be that warm outside for the car to heat up quickly.

Our top tip? Never leave your dog or other animal in a car on a hot day.

Dial back the daily exercise!

Fancy running a few hundred metres in blistering heat with nothing to drink? Nope, and our dog’s probably don’t want to either! Taking your canine friends out for long walks during hot weather could be very uncomfortable for them and even make them poorly.

Our top tip? Exercise dogs in the morning or evening, when there is less risk of them suffering with heatstroke or burning their paws on the pavement.

Stay cool!

Shade and water are our best friends when it comes to spending time in the hot sunshine, and the same goes for pets, particularly those like guinea pigs and rabbits who may spend time in an enclosure outdoors.

Our top tip? Provide your pets with plenty of shade and cool, fresh drinking water that they can access when they need it.

And that’s not all folks

Why not head on over to our website for more information on caring for pets, and other animals, during the summer?

Hi, I'm Sarah and I look after our fantastic junior membership. I've been at the RSPCA for seven years and I've loved every minute. There are so many dogs around the office - it's great to get to know them all! I love animals and used to have five amazing pet rats. And, in case you didn't know, rats are possibly THE best pet. Well to me anyway. I don't have a favourite animal though - I think they're all amazing. I've even started to like spiders a bit more, weird I know! The thing I enjoy most is seeing animals in their natural habitat - to me there's not much more thrilling than that.
