Let’s make some bird treats for our feathered friends…
- Wild bird seed
- Unsalted peanuts
- Rolled oats
- Bacon rind
- Coconut shells
Make two holes in the top of your coconut and drain, saving the milk. Then break the coconut shell and remove most of the flesh. Thread some string or wire through the hole in the top of the shell and make a loop.
Ask an adult to melt the lard, or suet, in a pan, then start adding the other ingredients (cheese, bacon rind, bird seed and unsalted peanuts). You should be very careful when dealing with hot fat – ask an adult to help. Once it’s all combined, spoon the mixture into your coconut shell. Make sure the string/wire is a long way into the pot. Place in the fridge to set overnight.
Birds love this mixture and the fat in it helps keep them warm. Hang the treats on a branch where the birds can see them, but away from mischievous cats!
