Praying mantis hitches ride in shipping container

Workers at a JCB warehouse in Stoke-on-Trent were taken by surprise when they discovered the 10cm-long carnivorous insect hiding in a container that had come all the way from India!

Staff at the JCB logistics centre, in Lowlands Road, put the praying mantis in a box and rang the RSPCA. RSPCA Animal Collection Officer (ACO) Catherine Strawford arrived and collected the exotic insect.

Exotic home

The praying mantis has now been taken to a specialist exotics centre in Stoke-on-Trent, where they will live out the rest of their life.

Unusual call

Catherine says: “It isn’t unusual for us to get calls about spiders coming over from abroad – but it’s rare for us to get called about a praying mantis! This particular one is very lucky as praying mantes have very delicate bodies, and this one has travelled unharmed 4,800 miles across the world!”
