A day to remember

Wow – what a brilliant day it was at the Tower of London this year as the winners of the RSPCA Young Photographer Awards 2017 were announced.

And the winner is…

We’re delighted to reveal that Gideon Knight (17) is the overall winner with his stunning photograph titled ‘A stab in the dark!’

Gideon told us: “On a winter morning, a little egret fishes in a shallow canal in my local park. These birds are rare visitors here so I approached carefully as close as I could get without spooking the egret. The bright morning light, coupled with a shadowed area behind the bird, created this stark contrast of black and white and highlighted the droplets of water created by the fishing egret.”

The winning photograph this year was described by judge Chris Packham as: “A very strong winner, very graphic and classical!

The Under 12s winner is….
Thomas Easterbrook (9) ‘Holiday hawk-moth’
“We were having lunch outside in the summer. I had my camera with me as I had been taking photos of a hoopoe in the garden, when I noticed this visitor to a flower right next to where we were sitting.”
