‘Rudolph with your nose so bright…’

You’ve all heard of Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, but how much do you know about the real animals? Reindeer are very specialised Arctic deer, native to places such as Norway, Finland and Greenland.

With Christmas coming up, here are some fun facts about reindeer:
  • Unlike other deer species, both male and female reindeer have antlers – males lose their antlers after the rut; from late winter to spring, but females lose theirs every summerAll my puzzles are about reindeer!

  • In North America, reindeer are also called caribou, which comes from French and means ‘the shoveler’

  • Reindeer are one of the only mammals to be able to see UV light

  • They are herbivores, so they only eat plants, except for times when food is very scarce, when they’ve been known to eat eggs, or even fish!

  • A reindeer’s hooves adapt to the climate – in summer they are sponge-like, but in winter the footpads tighten to stop them from slipping on snow.

These are some great facts to share with your friends! Do you have any Christmas facts to share with us at animal action?

Oh, hello there. I'm Leonardo. Don't call me Leo. I love a good mystery - that's why I'm your man when it comes to lists and reviews. I just love to snoop around! That's how I ended up getting my antlers caught in a football net all those years ago. I'm just fine now though.
