Ten years ago, optimism was the word when, after four years of discussion and decades of hope, the first overhaul of the animal legislation in England and Wales for 96 years came into effect in the first week of April 2007.

It’s the tenth anniversary of the enactment of the Animal Welfare Act this week, so we’ve put together ten facts that show why it has been such a crucial piece of legislation for the safeguarding of animal welfare.

  1. The act requires people, by law, to take reasonable steps to ensure that their animals’ five welfare needs are met. When the act was passed, this meant that for the first time officers could advise and intervene before an act of cruelty
